It has been said that one can hear the ruffling of the marsh grass and the sound of the water beating across the shores in the rhythms of Gullah. When heard talking Gullah speakers are often compared to Jamaicans. Gullah is dubbed as a â€Å"cousin language† to Caribbean dialects. Unlike other Southern dialects, Gullah is spoken fast and rapidly. A Board of Trustees established Georgia in 1732 with the primary purposes of settling impoverished British citizens and creating a mercantile system that would supply England with needed agricultural products. The colony enacted a 1735 antislavery law, but the prohibition was lifted in 1750. West Africans, the argument went, were far more able to cope with the climatic conditions found in the South. And, as the growing wealth of South Carolinas rice economy demonstrated, slaves were far more profitable than any other form of labor available to the colonists. Runaway slaves from the Sea Islands were harbored under Spanish protection in Florida prior to the Second Seminole War (1835-42). Native American refugees from around the South formed an alliance with African runaways to create the Seminole Nation. The name Seminole is from the Spanish word cimarron, meaning runaway. The 1842 agreement between the United States and Spain, which ended the Seminole hold on Florida, caused a migration to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Some Seminoles followed Spanish protectors to Cuba and to Andros Island in the Bahamas. Aspects of West African heritage have survived at each stage of the circle of migration, with rice, language, and spirituality persisting as cultural threads into the twentieth century. The Geechee/Gullah culture on the Sea Islands of Georgia has retained a heritage that spans two continents. In the early 1930s Lorenzo Turner, a African linguist, discovered that the Gullah people could recite African words and phrases. In 1932, Turner came to the Sea Islands in hopes of finding someone who could recite an African phrase, in a small remote area on one of the Georgia Sea Islands he found Amelia Dawley. For $25 dollars, not only could Dawley recite a phrase but she recited four lines of a Mende funeral song. Turner recorded this event in his book entitled Africanism in the Gullah Dialect. Nearly sixty years later, in 1989 Joseph Opala and Dr. Cynthia Schmidt gave a recording of Turner’s tape to a Freetown choral group. In 1991, Schmidt and Opala were informed that Dawley’s daughter, Mary Moran still lived in the area that Turner found her mother. Moran was able to recite the song that her mother sung for Turner. Preparations were made to find a Mende tribal member who knew the song. After a long search the pair found Baindu Jabati. Jabatis grandmother taught her the song. Basket weaving is a long standing African tradition, brought to the sea islands by the slaves. The main purpose for making baskets were for rice cultivation. Documentation of the developing culture on the Georgia islands dates to the nineteenth century. Originally baskets were made from longleaf pine needles and stripes of palmetto leaf. Today the baskets are made with sweet grass and palmetto leaf. Today, tourism has made Basket weaving a profitable profession. Making nets is a long standing African tradition, that was brought over by the African slaves. Nets have been used for centuries by the Gullah people as a way to catch shrimp, fish, crabs, etc. When it comes to church denomination, majority of the Gullah people are either Baptist or Methodist (includes AME). Praise houses were a place of worship and praise. Since the 1960s most praise houses have been closed and services are now held within a church. Gullahs follow Christian belief except they believe in multiple souls. A hag must stop and count the number of bristles in the broomstick and by the time she finishes it will be daylight. Documentation of the developing culture on the Georgia islands dates to the nineteenth century. By the late twentieth century, researchers and scholars had confirmed a distinctive group and identified specific commonalities with locations in West Africa. The research of Mary A. Twining and Keith E. Baird in Sea Island Roots: African Presence in the Carolinas and Georgia (1991) investigates the common links of islanders to specific West African moved counterclockwise in a circle, making certain never to cross their feet. Some aspects of the ring shout are thought to be related to the communal dances found in many West African traditions. The word shout is thought to be derived from saut, a West African word of Arabic origin that describes an Islamic religious movement performed to exhaustion. Since the Civil War (1861-65), ring shouts have been held after Sunday church services and on weeknights in community meeting houses. Touro University Worldwide Professional Ethics Fall 2017-1 September 24, 2017 Tamerla Glenn Dr. Michael Hamlin This paper analyses social, ethical and legal issues within a complaint initiated by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) against a psychologist, Steven Kreft (HCCC v Kreft, 2011). The HCCC investigated a complaint by a client of Kreft of personal and sexual disclosures, as well as unprofessional treatment in the solicitation of a photograph of the client in which the client was dressed in underwear. Kreft's actions are assessed in light of professional and ethical standards as well as potential breaches of the law. Steven Kreft, was an experienced psychologist narrowly specializing in the treatment of men with anxiety conditions using cognitive-behavioral therapy (HCCC v Kreft, 2011). The client, a 19 -year-old married women, was referred to Kreft because of anxiety and possibly panic attacks, but during the initial stages of counseling, she raised relationship problems, her appearance and sexual needs and practices with him and these became the focus of their sessions. Kreft conveyed to the client that he was not experienced or skilled in the treatment of relationship problems or sexual disorders, however, the client stated that she wished to continue working with him and he did not insist on referring her elsewhere. The client ultimately accused Kreft of failing to observe proper professional boundaries and engaging in inappropriate discussions of a personal nature in which he: Complimented her on her appearance referring to her petite size, short height and thin build, and likened her to his girlfriend; Asked the client to comment on his physical appearance; Disclosed details of his personal life including the number of sexual partners he had, that his girlfriend would share a bed with other girlfriends when they slept over, that he had been in love numerous times, and that he had thought about homosexuality during his youth (HCCC v Kreft, 2011). In addition, Kreft was accused of failing to follow or observe appropriate therapeutic practice and/or failing to observe proper professional boundaries when he asked the client for photographs for a study in which people would rate the client's appearance. One of these photographs pictured the client dressed in underwear. Kreft copied these photographs onto his computer for later presentation to unnamed others. This exercise was not recorded in the client's clinical notes (HCCC v Kreft, 2011). The HCCC invested the client's complaints and took disciplinary action against him. There are numerous social, ethical and legal issues in this case. Although Kreft was in fact a psychologist, for the purpose of this paper, his conduct will be assessed against the Australian Counseling Association's Code of Ethics and Practice (2012). The paper will explore the power imbalance between Kreft and his client, the effect of his behavior on the therapeutic relationship and whether Kreft's behavior might have breached sexual harassment laws. Ethical and legal guidelines exist to offer protection to people who may experience harm as a result of the actions of another person. According to Welfel (2013, p.3), professional ethics in counseling encompasses five dimensions of behavior including having sufficient knowledge, skill and judgement; respecting the client's human dignity and freedom; using a counselor's inherent power responsibly; and, acting to promote public confidence in the counseling profession. This provides a useful framework for assessing Kreft's conduct in this case. Beginning with Kreft's expertise, Kreft usually used a strict cognitive-behavioral protocol for the management of anxiety and panic disorders. Kreft is described by his own treating psychiatrist as a skilled practitioner in a narrow field, having been trained to think rationally and logically. Kreft's practice "involved administering protocols, carrying out logic-based interventions and requires his patients to occupy a mindset where they share a common objective and commitment to the treatment and its proposed outcome" (HCCC v Kreft, 2011 at 227). Although referred to Kreft because of his relevant expertise, the treatment interaction became sexualized when the client began talking about her sexual experiences and practices. There was further exploration of her concerns about her personal appearance, low self-esteem, need for validation by men via her sexual activities and description of her specific sexual behavior. Hence sacraments make Gods presence more real and understandable for us as believers. The church is needed to build up unity among all of us, to bring us together as a community to share in Gods life just as God wants. The church is a sign and instrument of unity with God. Gods love for us reconciles us to God and to each other and brings us together in unity. The church reminds us and is a symbol of what God has done for us and what he will do for us. According to Walter Kasper the unity of the church is grounded in salvation. As a community of Christians we all come together in the church. We share in the church and this makes our bond to each other and God stronger. However within this unity we may see diversity. For example the Trinity is made up of three divine spirits, the father, the son and the Holy Spirit. They make up one person. Church is made one with the unity of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Just as the Trinity makes up one person, we as Christians work for each other and build up the church together. We make up one body, Jesus Christ and one church. Just as the church is a sacrament of communion, a sign and instrument of unity among all men, this one sacrament is built up upon the seven sacraments. Christ is the sacrament of God, he is a visible sign of Gods invisible grace, the church is then a sacrament of Christ, the church is to us a sign of Gods grace. It is an instrument in its role to bring us together as a community. The church has a role to play in our lives just as we have a role to play in the life of the church become living symbols of divine love and beacons of hope in the world. The church wants to bring us together at the end of time in the Kingdom of God. We experience Gods love through his words, through his teachings, his miracles and especially through his passion, death and resurrection. He sacrificed everything for us. The church therefore is a sacrament of salvation. A central sacrament of the church is the Eucharist. This reminds us of what God has done for us and what he will do for us. The church takes us back in time and we remember and worship God for his sacrifices on our behalf. The Eucharist also directs us to the future and what God asks of us, to come together in unity in the Kingdom of God. The visible aspects will disappear and we come face to face with God in heaven. Salvation is achieving through Christ, through the church, his visible sign to us. By worshiping God we achieve salvation; we share in his divine life. By being saved, by being forgiven from our sins we will experience salvation. By worshiping the church we can also find salvation as the church worships on our behalf. The church says yes to God on our behalf. The church forms a bond or link with God. The church is a sign of the world and a community should be. The church as a sacrament because it offers us all seven sacraments which brings us to unity with God, we love and worship him and through these sacraments we reach salvation. God saves us by uniting to himself. God saves us through the church because it is a sacrament of salvation. The church is a universal sacrament. She is there for everyone. We experience the sacraments when we come into this world when we are born we are baptised. God Christ Church The church is the source of the seven sacraments: Baptism (when we are born), Eucharist (grow in the life of God), Penance, Confirmation (stand up for ourselves in God), Marriage (share in Gods love), Holy Order and Sacrament of the sick. The sacraments aid us and guide us in reaching salvation. Gods mission is to bring us together, share in his life and experience his live. He sacrificed his life for us so that we could live happy lives and he will be there to lead us on our lives and help us live a good life just as he did. We are called to be holy and be an intimate friend of Christ. The church communicates the salvation of Jesus Christ. The church is not only a sacrament of Christ, but a sacrament of man and of the world. The church as a sacrament reveals union of men with God or each other. The Church points back to Christ and what he has done for us and to the future to the Kingdom, what he will do for us. Salvation comes from the Messiah. We are all part of a local church in which are a community. Together as we join in unity we all form the universal Church. By worshiping God in the Church we find salvation. By worshiping the church, the church worships on our behalf. The church makes sacrifices for us. ‘So the church’s sacrifice in communion with Christ is vicarious by nature as the sacrament of Christ’s sacrifice and so also on behalf of the world of mankind’. We are all called to unity not just the church. We cannot reach salvation until we embrace God’s love. It is a sign of communion to all humanity. At the end of time we will have the Kingdom of God. The church has the task to get all humanity to the end. The church is the link between humanity and Good. The church makes God visible. The church is a communion that is needed to create unity among all men. Unity is rooted in Jesus Christ. Sharing in the church helps to create community with one another. Since every local church exists by sharing in the same baptism and the same Eucharist, none can exist in isolation’. Just as we as members and believers of the church are in community with each other, the local church’s are also in communion with each other. They make up one universal church. The remarkable leadership of Bismarck and his manipulation of events in 1866 and 1870 led to the creation of the imperial Germany.4 The initial years of the imperial Germany were marked by huge divisions at various levels. Private Temptation and Social Restraint in Measure for Measure      Ã‚   In his play, Measure for Measure, Shakespeare poses problems of law, justice, and personal freedom for which he offers no easy answers. Measure for Measure is very relevant to current political debates over public morality and the limits of self-expression. The play proposes the question: How do we reconcile social restraint and personal passion?    The Vienna of Measure for Measure, under the rule of Duke Vincentio, is a garden gone to seed. Permissiveness, corruption, and debauchery have choked out healthy growth in the absence of prudent cultivation. The play's climate of disillusionment finds modem resonance in the cynicism of the youth of today.    The play opens with the Duke preparing for a hasty yet deliberately ambiguous departure. Appointing morally impeccable Angelo as his replacement, the Duke passes over ice, a wise old judge named Escalus. But in a the obvious choice, play preoccupied with tests of character, it is appropriate that the city's most self righteous official undergoes the severest validation of his integrity. What follows is a drama of seduction. Angelo is tempted by the sins he condemns most harshly, sins, that release, him from the custody of his repressed desires. The Duke, who travels undercover to observe the effects of his lax rule, cautions Angelo in a manner suggesting his suspicion of the seductive power of authority. He is clearly interested in whether power will alter Angelo. Having failed himself to enforce the law, the Duke would, nevertheless, have Angelo be wary of the terrible power of judgment. He - advises his surrogate to fuse his personal values - what he believes in his heart with his public judg... ...characters. ”As You Like It” by William Shakespeare Essay

Support the view that Shakespeare is examining different kinds of love and marriage in this play? In the play As You Like It there are quite a few different types of love. There are four sexual relationships in the play, all of which have different varieties, or examples of love The main couple in the play are Rosalind and Orlando. They first meet in a wrestling match that Orlando has been entered in against Charles. Rosalind notices him for his good looks and youth, and because of this is concerned he will be hurt. Orlando wins the match though and as a token Rosalind gives Orlando her necklace. Orlando instantly falls in love with Rosalind when he first sees her and is stuck for what to say to her, â€Å"Can I not say, ‘I thank you’? My better parts are all Thrown down, and that which here stands up is but a Quintain, mere lifeless block.† Rosalind then runs off into the forest of Arden dressed as a man called Ganymede. Orlando also flees to the forest where he writes ridiculous love poems and posts them on trees for Rosalind to find. Rosalind, dressed as Ganymede, then becomes friends with Orlando and gives him advice on ways to go about asking her to marry him. She does this by pretending to be Rosalind while dressed as Ganymede. This is so Orlando does not recognise it is her. This can get quite confusing at times. She finally reveals to him that it has been her all along though and they get married straight away. This is the first kind of love where both people love each other and no one else. This is the most simple love situation in the poem because it has no complications of people loving other people, or them not being allowed to love each other. The couple that show the least romance throughout the play is Silvius and Phebe. Silvius is a kind-hearted shepherd who lives in the Forest of Arden. Phebe though is a rough shepherdess who finds Silvius annoying. The reason for this is because Silvius is deeply in love with Phebe, and she has rejected him many times. Phebe just ignores him though and because of this Silvius keeps on asking her to love him, † Sweet Phebe, do not scorn me, do not, Phebe. Say that you love me not, but say not so in Bitterness†. The only person Phebe finds attractive in the play is Ganymede, who is actually Rosalind. She writes a letter to Ganymede asking him to marry her, and is rejected quite obviously. As a result of this Phebe is forced to marry Silvius in the end because she has no one else who likes her. I think the aspect of love that is showed her is a cruel side of love. The reason I think this is because Phebe is virtually forced to marry Silvius when she does not want to. Silvius though is overjoyed because she is the love of his life and marrying her is his dream. This is unfair on Phebe though because she does not love him, but she has no one else so has to go along with it. Celia and Oliver are the most surprising couple in the play I think. This is because they meet very close to the end of the play, and instantly fall in love with each other. Another reason for this is that Celia is a very kind, likeable woman throughout the play. Oliver on the other hand changes his personality. At the beginning of the play he is a very nasty man who says he hates his brother because of his good looks and his ability to be liked by everyone he meets. His personality changes though when he is sent into the forest to find his brother, Orlando, by Duke Frederick. He finds Orlando and then he meets Celia, who he instantly falls in love with. He then makes the story up of saving his brother from a lion and his personality completely changes. â€Å"‘Twas I, but ’tis not I. I do not shame to tell you What I was, since my conversion so sweetly tastes, Being the thing I am†. He turns into the complete opposite of his old personality, and becomes very nice. This also attracts Celia to him, as well as her thinking he is good looking. This attraction between the two of them means they become a couple and get married too. This is the same kind of love as Orlando and Rosalind experienced. This is where they have no complications and both of them love each other. They also fall in love with the first sight of each other, as did Rosalind and Orlando. The next couple I am going to examine from the play is the pairing of Touchstone and Audrey. This is possibly the strangest couple in the play. My reason for thinking this is that they are completely different people, and have very different backgrounds. Touchstone is a court jester, and has lived a sophisticated courtly life. Audrey on the other hand is a country girl who has been brought up on a farm. Even though there are these differences, the two still get married. They were meant to be wed quite early into the play, but this did not go as planned and they did not. They did how ever talk more about it and finally got married at the end of the play. â€Å"Come sweet Audrey, we must be married†. The love that this couple portray is lust. Touchstone may not have had the chance with a woman before, but he now has the chance of Audrey. He is only with her really because of the fact he can get things out of her, mainly sex. She is a country wench and Touchstone knows this, and I think this is the reason he goes after her, â€Å"Truly, and to cast away honesty upon a foul slut Were to put good meat into an unclean dish†.
